How to nail your first semester exams

As the first semester of 2026 comes to a close, it is time to put what you have been learning to the test.

Final exams will take place from Monday, 4 May to Saturday, 9 May 2026, and for many students, this will be the first exam period at Canterbury Institute of Management (CIM).

It’s completely normal to feel a mix of pressure and excitement. The good news is that with the right preparation and support, you can approach your exams with confidence.

How to be prepared for exams

Preparation is not just about studying harder, but studying smarter. Start early by reviewing your course materials and identifying the key topics most likely to be assessed.

Create a simple study plan that breaks your revision into manageable sections. Focus on one subject at a time and set realistic goals for each day. This will help you stay organised and reduce last-minute stress.

Make sure you also check your exam timetable carefully so you know when and where each exam will take place across your campus, whether you are studying in Darlinghurst, Redfern, Melbourne or Darwin.

Study tips that actually work

Choosing the right place to study can make a big difference. A quiet, comfortable and distraction-free environment will help you focus and stay productive.

The CIM Library and Learning Support team offers a great space to study, along with access to textbooks, research databases and online academic resources.

You can also explore reading lists, find referencing guides, and support tools to help you prepare effectively on our library page.

If you prefer studying at home, try to set up a dedicated study area where you can concentrate without distractions.

To study effectively, focus on understanding your subjects rather than memorising everything. Try these simple strategies:

  • Mark time in your diary to study: no excuses!
  • Put your phone out of reach and turn off notifications on your computer
  • Use summaries, notes or mind maps to organise key ideas
  • Test yourself to check what you remember
  • Focus on topics highlighted in lectures and tutorials

Studying properly also means making sure you are learning the right material. Using library resources and research databases can help you find accurate and reliable information for your revision.

Be careful of using AI for shortcuts. Always double-check information that ChatGPT or Claude share with you is factual, up to date and relevant.

If you’re unsure where to start, CIM’s Learning Support team and Study Buddy Program can guide you, answer your questions and help you prepare for exams more effectively. Contact your Learning Support and Library staff at library@ciom.edu.au for more information.

Managing stress during exam time

Exam periods can feel overwhelming, especially if you are balancing study, work and personal commitments. That’s why managing stress is just as important as preparing for your exams.

Build healthy habits into your routine:

  • Take breaks: Short breaks help your mind reset and improve focus
  • Eat well and stay hydrated: Your brain needs energy to perform
  • Get enough sleep: Rest improves memory and concentration

Staying connected is also important. Keep in touch with family and friends, whether they are here in Australia or back home. A quick call or message can provide support and motivation.

If you feel overwhelmed, remember that help is available. CIM’s support teams are there to guide you through challenges, whether you need academic advice or someone to talk to. Click here to find out more about wellbeing support from CIM.

Academic integrity matters

As you prepare for exams and assessments, it’s important to understand academic integrity. This means completing your work honestly and taking responsibility for your learning.

CIM expects students to act with honesty and integrity in all assessments.

For your own benefit, it’s important to avoid plagiarism, copying others’ work or relying too heavily on AI tools. While AI can support your learning, your final work should always reflect your own understanding.

Putting in the effort now will help you build real knowledge and skills that will benefit you in your future career.

Complete your exams with confidence

Exams can feel stressful, but remember, you are part of a community at CIM. Your lecturers, the Student Support Team and your fellow students are all here to support you as you work towards your goals.
